Reflexology

What is Reflexology?

The history of Reflexology dates back many centuries, from early illustrations by the Egyptians and ancient texts by the Chinese, we know that they worked on the feet to promote good health.

It was discovered in the early 20th Century that the feet (hands and ears) contain maps of the body featuring reflex points relating directly to organs, glands, systems and structures. The whole body is also divided into ten longitudinal zones running its entire length, five on each side. Energy flows through each of these zones so the manipulation of specific reflex areas with the fingers and thumbs helps to clear these blockages.

Reflexology also stimulates the body’s self-healing ability promoting balance and well being. Reflexology is a holistic therapy that treats the whole body, encompassing physical, mental and emotional aspects of health, concentrating primarily on root cause rather than on the symptoms alone.

What are the benefits of Reflexology?

Reflexology can help to:

Alleviate anxiety, tension, depression and stress, calm the mind and aid relaxation

Improve insomnia by promoting restful sleep

Calm sinus problems and congestion

Enhance circulation and stimulate lymphatic drainage, increase energy levels and concentration

Reduce tension headaches, migraines and eyestrain

Aid posture and ease muscular tension or stiffness, ease sport related injuries, diminish wide-ranging pain

Soothe stress related skin conditions

Relieve respiratory and digestive disorders

Encourage a general sense of wellbeing, calmness and relaxation, balance the body, mind and spirit

Will I need more than one treatment?

This will depend on your individual needs and expectations. Most people have between three and six sessions, usually once a week, followed by monthly body maintenance

What happens during a Reflexology treatment?

During the first consultation, the therapist will ask for a number of basic details regarding medical history and general health concerns in order to best tailor your treatment. Every aspect of treatment will be kept in the strictest of confidence. If this treatment is  appropriate for you, the therapist will ask you to remove your footwear and settle you into a comfortable position.

The treatment itself will consist of relaxing massage movements, combined with light pressure and walking movements, applied to the reflex points on the feet. This will be a pleasant experience without pain or discomfort. Sensing any congestion or imbalance, the practitioner will use pressure and massage to influence the flow of energy through your body and stimulate balance and healing.

After–Care Advice

There might be after effects and these are normal reactions to treatments. The symptoms can be uncomfortable at the time and usually pass after 24 hours. Your body is working to remove toxins from your system and your treatment speeds up this process.

Typical after effects may include tiredness, muscular aches and pains, going to the toilet more often, changed sleep patterns and headaches.

To make sure that you get the most from your treatment, you should follow the guidance below:

Drink plenty of water.  Massage helps your body remove toxins from your body. Drinking plenty of water helps this process.

Eat Light Meals. Avoid heavy, stodgy foods; they usually contain more toxins and are harder for your body to break down.

Relax. Try and rest as much as you can after a treatment, you should feel revitalised. Remember, no housework!!

Don’t sun bathe or use sun beds, it isn’t safe as your skin will burn easily due to the oils.

Reduce the use of: Caffeine, alcohol and tobacco, these are all toxins which your body is working to remove and they may disrupt sleep patterns.

I look forward to working with you. Taking this time out for  yourself is so important. Please do not hesitate to call me if you have any questions
